The Cycle of Life

These are images from a short film I made with Jae Min Park, while at a summer animation workshop at Film School Zlin, in the Czech Republic.

The film is about the constant battle between the natural world and the built world, and how, despite how strong and impenetrable a built environment may seem, the natural forces of nature will always be more powerful!

We used a relief animation technique, using artificial plants and cardboard cut-outs, filmed on sheets of glass.

One of the artificial flowers we made, using fabric over a simple wire armature. This meant that they could be easily animated and held their shape well.

Here, we animated oil paint directly onto a sheet of glass, to create a billowing smoke effect.

The jungle after reclaiming its land.

Myself and Jae Min, at our workstation, when we had finished filming!

A stop motion set used for a demonstration during a masterclass in the Zlin studios.

A sandstone sculpt I made during the workshop.

The Clocktower

Some design concepts for The Clocktower, an idea I have for a short stop-motion animation film.

This rickety
tower is the home of Epoch Toll, the Keeper of Time (shown below). He is as old as time itself, and is responsible for the smooth running of the world's time.

character concept for the Keeper of Time

Death, a lazy character who can't be bothered collecting Monique - a young gypsy girl who dies after being hit by an apple cart - due to her death occuring outside his daily operating hours. Instead, he persuades the Keeper of Time to turn back time - a very risky and forbidden process - and he will collect her the next day. However, this results in Monique getting caught up in the World of Time, and she gets lost within the Clocktower, where no human is meant to go. Much chaos ensues.
